Finding answers. Changing lives.

The Neuroscience Institute in Cincinnati is a leading treatment, research and teaching center for complex neurological conditions. Based at the University Hospital, its physicians and researchers have created national models for the treatment and research of complex conditions ranging from ischemic stroke to Parkinson’s disease to trigeminal neuralgia to surgical techniques for brain tumors.

TNI includes a team of more than 85 experts from nine specialty focus areas who collaborate across disciplines to provide the most comprehensive diagnosis and treatment possible. Key accomplishments of TNI include:

  1. In 2005, The Neuroscience Institute became the first center in Cincinnati and one of 140 nationally to be certified as a national Primary Stroke Center by the Joint Commission on Accreditation of Healthcare Organizations (JCAHO). This verifies the center follows nationally recognized best practices for the treatment of stroke patients, which leads to better outcomes. The center was re-certified in 2007.
  2. The Neuroscience Institute is also home to the Greater Cincinnati and Northern Kentucky Stroke Team, which serves as a community resource for the rapid diagnosis and treatment of stroke patients. Neurologists at TNI have pioneered advanced treatments in stroke and have authored numerous works on this topic.
  3. The Cincinnati Epilepsy Center has been given a level IV rating – the highest level rating for epilepsy care – by the National Association of Epilepsy Centers. TNI treats hundreds of patients annually and has the second highest patient volume in the state of Ohio in epilepsy treatment.
  4. Based at the region’s only Level I adult trauma center, TNI includes a comprehensive neurotrauma program with specially trained physicians, neurosurgeons and clinicians in the treatment of catastrophic injuries to the brain, spinal cord and peripheral nerves.
  5. TNI includes the region’s only neurointensivist, a physician specially trained to treat patients in a neuroscience critical care unit. Her experience has lead to innovative treatment techniques, such as 24-hour EEG monitoring of unconscious patients to determine the potential for static seizures impeding progress.
  6. The James J. and Joan A. Gardner Family Center for Parkinson’s Disease and Movement Disorders is one of the most progressive in the country, seeking to understand, research and treat this often debilitating disease.
  7. The Waddell Center for Multiple Sclerosis is a certified member of the National MS Consortium and an affiliate of the National MS Society. Its team has conducted groundbreaking research into the underlying mechanisms of MS and clinical trials to explore best treatment options for patients with MS.
  8. The Center for Advanced Brain Tumor Research and treatment at TNI is internationally renowned for its compassionate team approach, unique image-guided surgical expertise, restorative treatments and basic and clinical research.
  9. The otolaryngologists who are part of The Neuroscience Institute have received national recognition for advancing treatment in smell and taste disorders, swallowing, hearing impairment and cochlear implants.
